Greetings!
It’s been a minute, but in any case, welcome to this week’s “Song Sunday.” Today’s track is that from the English band The 1975: titled “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME,” it’s a cryptic, but also evident track about love and the infidelity that comes along with it.
Although I’d heard about The 1975 before, I hadn’t actually listened to their works. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon this track that I got hooked on their electro-pop music. What made “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” especially infectious was its tropical-house bounce: despite its minor-key composition (which often implies a slower, moodier sound), it’s the fast-paced, syncopated tropical beat which adds that energetic vibe that’s sure to get you vibing, let alone dancing, at the next club you head off to.
Lyrically-speaking, the song seems obscure in meaning on the surface level, but in actuality, it’s simpler than one might think. With the chorus of “calling” a lover several times and the double meaning in the title itself, one can implicate that it’s about a relationship gone wrong, with the singer having to call “four times” to apologize for cheating on the lover, knowing that he cheated “too (many) times.”
In any case, “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” is a bop that I can imagine hearing at a club– better yet, bring the club to your home– it’s less expensive and just as fun, if not more! Feel free to give it a listen, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
