Happy Sunday, everyone!
Granted, this song is a relatively old one from 2015, but somehow I only discovered it just recently. From Guam-born singer Pia Mia, “Do It Again” is a tropical-R&B-pop track that’s sure to help you feel those summer vibes.
Prior to hearing this song, I only knew about Pia Mia from one song I’d heard years ago (“On My Mind”), which I’d listened to once, but forgot about soon after. I wouldn’t say it was the best song from her, but it wasn’t until I heard “Do It Again” that I stepped back and realized that Pia Mia was, in fact, a good singer!
Perhaps upon listening to “Do It Again,” people might first assume that it was Ariana Grande singing it– however, it’s not the case! It’s a shame, because Pia Mia is seriously underrated (and, in my opinion, a better singer than Grande #sorrynotsorry). Really, Pia Mia has some pretty serious singing chops with a wide octave range that contains a dangerous falsetto enough to make anyone drop to their knees (if you don’t believe me, jump to 2:14 and you’ll see what I mean).
The song itself is simple in lyrics about a one-night stand that wants to be more, but tune-wise, it’s catchy enough to make you want to play on a summer night, beer in hand, and the beach in the backdrop of a casual kickback with friends (as the music video shows). Sure, Chris Brown and Tyga are featured in this track, but it’s Pia Mia who really shines.
Aside from her singing ability, Pia Mia is gorgeous. It’s no surprise she’s also a model, with her platinum-blond hair, tanned skin, and piercing blue-gray eyes. Despite the fact that she was only 18 when this song came out, she already had the stage presence (and sex appeal) to show that she was a star.
I also appreciate that the music video itself was a nod to her Chamorro heritage, with scenes of Pacific Islander dancers in the night and the overall tropical vibes. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this interpretation, but if so, I think it’s a great way to highlight another side to American culture, as Guam itself is considered part of American territory (however unincorporated).
Overall, “Do It Again” is perhaps one of Pia Mia’s breakout songs. She definitely has a naturally-talented voice, and she definitely needs to be recognized more, even in this already over-saturated music industry. If my thoughts aren’t enough to convince you, then listen to her recent cover of “Passionfruit” and get back to me:
Give this song a listen, will you? Enjoy your Sunday!
