Happy Sunday, folks!
This week’s “Sunday Slow Jams” is a “mini-throwback,” as I’d like to call it, back to three years ago with the release of American singer-songwriter Christina Perri’s “Human.” Slow and uplifting, this ballad is very much one of my favorite songs from the artist herself.
Now, I’ve listened to Perri’s other hit singles before (“Jar of Hearts,” “A Thousand Years”), but I never quite got on-board with them. Perhaps it was the fact that the first one was so overplayed on the radio when it came out, and the second was very much associated with the Twilight series (as you can tell, I’m not the hugest fan…). With “Human,” however, I actually like it in its simplicity: melody-wise, it’s quite sparse, which gives Perri the opportunity to shine with her vocals…and I admit, she really outdoes herself on this track!
The music video itself is also simple, but lovely in its composition. While the half-robot, half-human trope is a bit overused, it works effectively here to capture Perri’s message about learning to accept oneself for their faults, their passions and, overall, for being human. The transition from pure and bionic to tattooed and human shows both sides of beauties that makes the music video, along with the track, so wonderful.
I encourage you to give it a listen– otherwise, have a good rest of the weekend!
