The Fray- Happiness (SSJ #57)

Happy weekend, bloggers!

Today’s “Sunday Slow Jams” is another throwback track from my high school years. From the American rock band The Fray, “Happiness” is the final song taken from the band’s 2009 eponymous album. Brooding and symbolic, its melody captured my attention when I first heard it, and to this day it still remains with me.

With its slow, acoustic-guitar lilt, the song tells of Happiness herself, as personified in the lyrics throughout. What is interesting about the character, though, is that she doesn’t appear to represent what we normally would imagine happiness to be, e.g. calm, serene, joyous. Instead, the lyrics capture her as destructive, with a “violent roar” that “breaks your faith to pieces on the floor” that might be interpreted as something either dangerous or exciting to the individual at hand.

It’s no wonder, then, that “Happiness” eventually builds up to a choir-inspired crescendo towards the end, which seems to evoke some sort of spirituality in the idea of happiness. Throughout the song, the lyrics portray Happiness as something you can’t strive for, but rather let it happen to you, as depicted in the lines, “Let it be, you can’t make it come or go” and “Look for it, but you’ll never find it all/Let it go, live your life and leave it/Then one day, wake up and she’ll be home.”

That said, I don’t believe it would be a stretch to say that this song is rooted in religion, particularly in the lyrics’ suggestion of letting oneself receive Happiness by chance, instead of finding her. This sort of passivity mirrors that of Christian values, which isn’t a surprise since The Fray members are Christians themselves. Although I’m not Christian (nor religious, by any means), the song is very uplifting and I believe it spreads a good message about letting life take you wherever it takes you, as long as you’re happy in the end.

Feel free to give it a listen. Have a good Sunday!
